MSMSS00017

Use High Pressure Water Jetting Equipment

Description

This skills set is targeted to those candidates who are maintenance workers, construction workers or those in the maritime industry where the worker;

  • is required to clean rust and debris from construction materials
  • is required to clear storm water drains of tree roots and debris
  • is required to clear sewage drains of debris and blockages

Class B cleaning operations should comply with the to the AS/NZS 4233.2 – 2013 High pressure water jetting systems Safe operation and maintenance.

Purpose

Candidates will be permitted by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to undertake work involving high pressure water jetting Class B operations under supervision.

As a result of this program, candidates will be able to:

  • assess hazards and risk associated with water jetting and implementing controls
  • select, inspect, donn, doff and caring for PPE
  • identify the most appropriate safety systems for work associated with the water jetting system
  • Use a high-pressure water jetting system under supervision

Duration

The program is delivered over approximately 8 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.

Entry requirements

There is no minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.).

This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT’s Risk Assessment, HPWJ permit, Incident report and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Assessment requirement

Candidates must succefully complete all assessment activties in order to be assessed as competent. The assessment for water jetting is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated workbased scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements.

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing, lock out tag out procedures, water jetting exercises and reporting findings. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.

All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While this is a group-based activity it allows all candidates to show competence to undertake the activity with a holistic approach understanding all the varying roles and responsibilities.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a theory assessment comprising 50 short-answer questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Qualification

This skills set has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package MSM Manufacturing training package. On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Attainment for the Skill Set MSMSS00003 Use high-pressure water jetting equipment.

Delivery mode

The course will be delivered using different modes of delivery involving classroom-based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training will be coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in your industry simulated work environment.

Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and discussion. During practical skills development sessions, candidates will be asked to work in pairs and facilitated through a range of practical skills in water jetting. Candidates will learn skills through practical instruction using demonstrated performance methods such as: Demonstration, explanation.

Units of competency

Elective Units

  • MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • MSMWHS110 – Follow emergency response procedures
  • MSMWHS200 – Work Safely
  • MSMWJ202 – Use high pressure water jetting equipment

Materials or equipment required

Clients must wear Kevlar Trouser, Kevlar Jacket, Kevlar spats over work boots, safety glasses, face shield and rubber gloves for the practical component of the training. Where a client does not wear the above PPE, they will not be able to participate in the practical component due to hazards associated with HPWJ.
