This unit of competency MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus as a standalone unit. This unit of competency is targeted to those workers who as part of their activities require breathing apparatus because of uncontrolled hazardous gases/vapours in confined spaces, are required to enter and working in a confined space with an oxygen deficient atmosphere and require breathing apparatus.
Participants will be motivated by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to undertake many facets of breathing apparatus.

The program is delivered over 6 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.
There are no specified entry requirements for this training program.
It is acknowledged that many candidates will have vocational experience that will have provided suitable preparation for the program. It is usually the case that personnel entering this program are identified by their employer based on their need for professional development and growth.
Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete theory assessment comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.
Practical Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills set integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing and also fault finding and reporting. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.
This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package MSM Manufacturing Training package (Release 6.0). On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Achievement for the unit MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus will be issued.
The course will be delivered using a combination of classroom based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training maybe coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in a simulated work environment at the MIWT training facility Warehouse 21 located in Station Street Moonah, or in your work environment.
Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and discussion. During practical sessions, candidates will be asked to work in pairs and facilitated through a range of practical search and retrieval skills using BA equipment.

Elective Units
Clients must wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear for the practical component of the training.
Where a client does not wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear they may not be able to participate in the practical component due to work health and safety concerns.
