MSMWHS217

Gas Testing

Description

the unit of competency MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres as a standalone unit. The target participants for this course delivery are those working in industry and may have some knowledge of atmosphere gas testing but do not hold the unit of competency MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres.

Therefore the candidates in this case have been engaged in the workforce doing a variety of different types of work associated with atmospheric hazards in certain environments, namely confined spaces. This training will enable them to perform the requirements of gas atmosphere testing prior to any worker entering the environment.

Purpose

Candidates will be empowered by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to accomplish gas testing for atmospheric hazards.

As a result of this program, candidates will be able to:

  • Access, interpret and apply technical and safety information for gas atmosphere testing.
  • Prepare equipment for gas testing (Calibrate and challenge test)
  • Test the atmosphere for hazardous gas
  • Record atmospheric results on permit
  • Clean, maintain and store equipment

Duration

The program is delivered over approximately 4-6 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.

Entry requirements

There is no minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.).

This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT risk assessment for the environment that requires atmosphere testing, gas atmosphere permit and the oral / written knowledge assessment.

Assessment requirement

Candidates must succefully complete all assessment activties in order to be assessed as competent. The assessment for gas testing is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated workbased scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements.

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational start up checks calibration, challenge testing, gas atmosphere ship board environments and reporting findings and faults. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on the equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.

All candidates are required to take part in practical activities to complete the course.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a theory assessment comprising 27 short-answer questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Qualification

This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package MSM – Manufacturing Training Package (Release 6.0). On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Attainment (SoA) for the unit MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres will be issued. The unit of competency is nationally recognised and provides individuals with a valuable qualification that can be applied throughout Australia.

Delivery mode

The course will be delivered using different modes of delivery involving classroom-based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training will be coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in a simulated work environment or at the MIWT training facility Warehouse 21 located at 57 Albert Road Moonah Tasmania.

Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and discussion. During practical skills development sessions, candidates will be stepped through a range of practical skills from calibration, challenge testing, and gas atmosphere testing ship board environments. Candidates will learn skills through practical instruction using demonstrated performance methods such as: Demonstration, explanation.
