Hand and power tools

Description

This training course is based on the National Unit of Competency RIISAM203D: Use Hand And Power Tools. This course covers the use of hand and power tools in the resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for work, selecting and using hand tools and power tools, and cleaning up.

This course covers the following topics;

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
  • Select power tools appropriate to the task requirements
  • Use power tools for a determined sequence of operations to produce desired outcomes to job specifications
  • Identify unsafe or faulty tools and mark for repair before, during and after use according to SOP
  • Undertake operational maintenance of tools according to principles, techniques and SOPs

Purpose

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to safely use hand and power tools in a wide range of occupations. It involves planning and preparing for work, selecting and using hand and power tools and cleaning up of work area.

Duration

The program is delivered over approximately 8 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.

Entry requirements

There is No minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.).

This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT’s Job Safety Analyses (JSA) / Risk Assessment and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Language, literacy and numeracy requirements
Persons who take part in this refresher program require sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to read, comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. Job Safety Analyses (JSA) / Risk assessment and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Assessment requirement

Candidates must successfully complete all assessment activities in order to be assessed as competent.
The assessment for water jetting is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated workbased scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements.

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational safety checks, donning appropriate PPE and using the hand and power tools on various material. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.

All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While this is a group-based activity it allows all candidates to show competence to undertake the activity with a holistic approach understanding all the varying roles and responsibilities.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a theory assessment comprising 27 short-answer questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Qualification

National recognition
This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.

On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Attainment for RIISAM203D Use hand and power tools will be issued.

Delivery mode

Program outline
The course will be delivered using different modes of delivery involving classroom-based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training will be coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in a simulated work environment or at the MIWT training facility Warehouse 21 located at 57 Albert Road Moonah Tasmania.

Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and discussion. During practical skills development sessions, candidates will be asked to work in pairs and facilitated through a range of practical skills in water jetting. Candidates will learn skills through practical instruction using demonstrated performance methods such as: Demonstration, explanation.

Materials or equipment required

Clothing Requirements
Clients must wear long sleeves shirts and work trousers, work boots, safety glasses, safety shield and hearing protection for the practical component of the training.

Where a client does not wear covered work boots and work wear they will not be able to participate in the practical component due to work health and safety concerns.
