Work Safely at Heights

Description

This unit of competency is targeted at those participants who are apprentices, maintenance workers, construction workers or those in the maritime industry who maybe exposed to a risk of a fall from one level to another that is reasonably likely to cause injury to the worker.

  • access, interpret and apply technical and safety information for working at heights
  • assess hazards and risk associated with working at heights and implement control methods
  • select, inspect, donn, doff and caring for PPE
  • identify the most appropriate safety systems for working at heights
  • correctly fitting, adjusting and anchor fall protection systems
  • perform simulated tasks safely at heights
  • dismantle, remove, inspect safety systems
  • Use 4:1 rope rescue equipment

Purpose

The purpose of the unit of competency is to alert maintenance workers, construction workers or those in the maritime industry to the risks associated with a fall from one level to another that is reasonably likely to cause injury to the worker.

This includes circumstances in which the worker is:

  • in or on plant or a structure that is at an elevated level
  • in or on plant that is being used to gain access to an elevated level
  • in the vicinity of an opening through which a person could fall
  • in the vicinity of an edge over which a person could fall
  • on or in the vicinity of a surface through which a person could fall
  • on or near the vicinity of a slippery, sloping or unstable surface

Duration

The program is delivered over 6-7 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.

Entry requirements

There is No minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.).

This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWTs learning materials, i.e. MIWTs Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Language, literacy and numeracy requirements

Persons who undertake this refresher program require sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to read, comprehend and complete MIWTs learning materials, i.e. MIWTs Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS), and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Assessment requirement

Candidates must succefully complete all assessment activties in order to assessed as competent.

The assessment for WAH course is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated workbased scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements:

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills set integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing and also fault finding and reporting. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.

All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While this is a group-based activity it allows all participants to show competence to undertake the activity with a holistic approach understanding all the varying roles and responsibilities.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete theory assessment comprising31 short answer & multiple-choice questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Qualification

This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package RII_R1.0 Resources and Infrastructure Industry. On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Attainment (SoA) for the unit RIIWHS204D Work safely at heights will be issued. The unit of competency is nationally recognised and provides individuals with a valuable qualification that can be applied throughout Australia.

Delivery mode

The course will be delivered using different modes of delivery involving classroom-based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training will be coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in a simulated work environment or at the MIWT training facility Warehouse 21 located at 57 Albert Road Moonah Tasmania.
Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using handouts and discussion. During practical sessions, candidates will be asked to work in pairs and facilitated through a range of practical skills using various height safety equipment. Participants will learn skills through practical instruction using demonstrated performance methods such as: Demonstration, explanation.

Materials or equipment required

Clothing Requirements
Clients must wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear for the practical component of the training.
Where a client does not wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear they may not be able to participate in the practical component due to work health and safety concerns.
