Tower rescue

Description

This course will provide the candidates with skills and knowledge to undertake rescue from various structures.

As a result of this program, participants will be able to:

  • access, interpret and apply technical and safety information for tower rescue
  • assess hazards and risk associated with tower rescue
  • select, inspect, donn, doff and caring for PPE
  • identify the most appropriate rescue systems for retrieval of the worker
  • correctly fitting, adjusting and anchor fall protection systems and rescue systems
  • perform simulated rescue from towers
  • Use hauling lowering systems
  • dismantle, remove, inspect safety systems

Purpose

This unit of competency is targeted to participants who are telecommunication workers or workers in the wind tower industry where the worker is required to rescue injured personnel from telecommunication towers, wind turbines or electrical transmission towers

Duration

The program is delivered over 6 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.

Entry requirements

Pre-requisite units where applicable

  • HLTAID009 Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • and UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, or
  • CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform dogging
    • This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT’s Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Assessment requirement

Candidates must successfully complete all assessment activities in order to assessed as competent.

The assessment for Tower Rescue is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated work-based scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements:

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills set integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing and also fault finding and reporting. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.

All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While this is a group-based activity it allows all participants to show competence to undertake the activity with a holistic approach understanding all the varying roles and responsibilities.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete theory assessment comprising 23 short answer & multiple-choice questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Qualification

This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package UET Transmission, Distribution and Rail Sector R1.0 On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Attainment (SoA) for the unit UETDRMP009 Perform Tower Rescue will be issued. The unit of competency are nationally recognised and provide individuals with a valuable qualification that can be applied throughout Australia.

Delivery mode

The course will be delivered using different modes of delivery involving classroom-based instruction and practical skills development sessions. Training will be coordinated from MIWT head office and delivered in a simulated work environment or at the MIWT training facility Warehouse 21 located at 57 Albert Road Moonah Tasmania.

Candidates will participate in facilitated learning sessions using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and discussion. During practical sessions, candidates will be asked to work in pairs and facilitated through a range of practical skills using various height safety equipment. Participants will learn skills through practical instruction using demonstrated performance methods such as: Demonstration, explanation.

Materials or equipment required

Clients must wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear for the practical component of the training.

Where a client does not wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear they may not be able to participate in the practical component due to work health and safety concerns.
