Purpose:

The purpose of this unit of competency is to alert maintenance workers, construction workers or those in the maritime industry of the dangers of woring in on or near a confined space and where the worker;
- is likely to enter a confined space,
- is intending to enter a confined space
- inadvertently enters a confined space
- is operating as a standby for entry persons

Course Name:RIIWHS202D - Enter and work in confined spaces
Course Code:RIIWHS202D
Course Duration:The program is delivered over approximately 8 hours and is comprised of theory and practical sessions. The program culminates with a practical assessment activity and theory assessment.
Training Plans: Enter and work in confined spaces - $190.00
Description:

Candidates will be empowered by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to undertake many facets of work involving confined spaces.
As a result of this program, candidates will be able to:
- access, interpret and apply technical and safety information for entering and working in confined spaces
- assess hazards and risk associated with entering and working in confined spaces and implementing controls
- select, inspect, donn, doff and caring for PPE
- identify the most appropriate safety systems for entering and conduct work in confined spaces
- perform a simulated safe entry into a confined space

Assessment:

Candidates must succefully complete all assessment activties in order to be assessed as competent.
The assessment for CSE course is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated workbased scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements.

Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing, lock out tag out procedures, entering, exiting simulated confined spaces and reporting findings. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.
All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While this is a group-based activity it allows all candidates to show competence to undertake the activity with a holistic approach understanding all the varying roles and responsibilities.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a theory assessment comprising 27 short-answer questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

Entry Requirements:

There is No minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.).
This course requires the participant to comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT’s confined space risk assessment, confined space entry permit, Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and the oral/written knowledge assessment.

Language, literacy and numeracy requirements
Persons who take part in this refresher program require sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to read, comprehend and complete MIWT’s learning materials, i.e. MIWT’s confined space risk assessment, confined space entry permit, Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and the oral / written knowledge assessment.
