HLTAID001 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

The program provides participants with the skills and knowledge to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a range of situations that may include community and workplace settings and in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

Participants will be empowered by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to be able to provide CPR in an emergency situation.
As a result of this program, participants will be able to:
• Recognise an emergency situation
• Identify, assess and minimise immediate hazards to health and safety
• Assess the casualty and recognise the need for CPR
• Perform CPR to current ARC guidelines
• Operate an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• Convey details of incident to emergency

Candidates must succefully complete all assessment activties in order to assessed as competent.
The assessment for cardiopulmonary resuscitation is to be conducted using a combination of written theoretical assessment and practical assessment during simulated scenarios. The following assessment methods are to be applied to collect the required assessment evidence in accordance with training package requirements.
Performance Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are dangers to self and others, response checks simulated call to 000 and performing air and breathing checks, the compression process and use of an AED. Trainers will challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.
All candidates are required to take part in a practical scenario to complete the course. While working in pairs it allows the candidates to show competence to undertake the activity.

Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete theory assessment comprising 32 short answer questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.

There is No minimum standard set as a prerequisite to entry this course. However, foundation skills are required (reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy and learning.) Candidates must have the ability to verbalise a simple incident report.
